Childhood and Education
Daniel Zayas was born in Whittier, California on August 25, 1986. He spent his formative years in the Greater Los Angeles area, graduating from West Covina High School in 2004.
Daniel Zayas served in the United States Air Force between 2006 and 2011 as an airborne cryptologic linguist, also completing a course in Korean Studies at the University of Korea in Seoul. Other jobs included Starbucks barista and Community manager for a coworking space.
Daniel Zayas attended the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University between the years of 2011 and 2013. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism, with a focus in public relations and digital media entrepreneurship. During that time he was also a managing editor for the college online publication.
His first position in the tabletop game industry was as marketing director for Eagle-Gryphon Games from 2016 to 2017. However, it was with the publication series called The Kickstarter Badger and later the Board Game Badger that he achieved community acclaim. Through the Meeple Mechanic and Smarter Backer blog websites, The Board Game Badger originally consisted of 10 tabletop Kickstarter campaigns ranked by best practices. This project evolved over three years into the project it is today on this blog site, ranking campaigns by dollars raised, five of which have funded and five of which haven’t yet funded.
The secondary series to be debuted on the website was Foxhole Fiver. In this series, Daniel interviewed various publishers as they were mid-Kickstarter campaign and asked them a range of questions related to Kickstarter best practices. This project was abandoned and only recently started to resurface via the guest blog on this website.
Daniel went on to streamline a lot of functions related to marketing a large publisher who also used Kickstarter to fund print runs with Eagle-Gryphon Games. This experience allowed him to see the publishing process from designed prototype to Kickstarter production, fulfillment, and eventually to see a product in traditional distribution.
Throughout this time, Daniel assisted many creators in his off time via his leadership roles in various social media communities. It was this commitment to helping countless crowdfunding creators that allowed Daniel to be recognized in 2017 with the distinction of being named as a verified Kickstarter Expert. This distinction allowed Daniel to consult for future creators as a professional endeavor.
Daniel is also currently the US Sales Manager for LongPack Games Manufacturing, where he further helps creators communicate with the office in Shanghai to fabricate and source manufacturing solutions for their projects. Via this role, he is able to travel on the behalf of LongPack Games to various games conventions around the world.
Daniel Zayas’ love of crowdfunding games began while working at the coworking space when he discovered modern tabletop design through a community game night. Through his blogging, Zayas internalized the resources available and he created his 10 point guide to a perfect crowdfunding campaign.
